About Us
The Onondaga Dance Institute offers a diverse training to its students with a solid ballet foundation in order to develop the most versatile and marketable dancer for those on the professional track. The studio strives to provide an enriching, enjoyable, and multicultural experience for all that study here. It is a unique dance studio in being " Creatively Progressive and Culturally Significant" to Central New York.
CURRICULUM
CREATIVE MOVEMENT- encourages children's natural exploration of the body and its movement in space. This Class develops creativity, special awareness, expression, rhythms, counting, memorization and motor skills. It also builds upon a child's natural joy of movement and life while developing strength and coordination. Children learn to value their individualism and group experiences.
PRE-BALLET- parallels the Creative Movement class, but with a higher level of challenge. The class introduces basic ballet movements, body alignment, and stretches.
BALLET- Classical ballet is the foundation of concert dance. Students will learn ballet technique, vocabulary, history, and performing skills. Studying ballet takes repetition, memorization, commitment, determination and a desire to succeed . Classical Ballet develops strength, coordination, flexibility, body-awareness, poise and self-confidence.
POINTE- Once strength and proper alignment have been achieved, dancers advance to Pointe work. Dancers must be physically,technically, and mentally prepared before they begin Pointe work. Students must be enrolled in at least three(3) ballet classes per week.
MODERN- promotes freedom of expression. Classes provide students with technique, flexibility and body alignment while exploring the elements of space and movement.
DUNHAM TECHNIQUE- a modern dance technique and philosophy created by the legendary Katherine Dunham . It is based on African and Caribbean Dance styles.
JAZZ- has roots in African dance and compliments jazz music in being innovative, improvisational, polyrhythnic, and encourages personal expression. Jazz has definite technique and terminology stemming from ballet. Student will learn isolation of various body parts, flexibility and quick memorization of dance combinations and performance skills.
HIP HOP JAZZ- urban social dances fused with solid jazz technique as seen on music videos and TV specials.
MUSICAL THEATRE- a Broadway style jazz class combined with show-style tap.
TAP- tap dance enhances visionary, and audio skills by allowing the student to absorb and execute steps and rhythms produced metal "taps" on the feet.
DRAMA in DANCE- An introductory class for teens and preteens. The class consists of fundamentals in acting, improvisation, and the development of understanding the relationship between drama and dance.
CREATIVE DRAMATICS- an acting class for young children (ages 8-12)
